Your smile is the first thing people see when they meet you. It is part of the first impression you make. People tend to associate healthy, white teeth with a youthful appearance. Everyone wants a bright, healthy smile but oral health goes deeper than that. Oral health touches every aspect of our lives but is often taken for granted. Your mouth is a window into the health of your body. You can practice good oral hygiene by always brushing your teeth twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between your teeth once a day with floss or another interdental cleaner, replacing your toothbrush every three or four months and by eating a balanced diet and limiting between-meal snacks.
The color of your teeth can be improved by the range of whitening products available in the market .BUT DO THEY WORK?
Below is the range of products available in the market, and we have been providing all kinds of whitenings in our office for years. Dr sareen and Dr Rao would like to shed some light on all these products. And the results are based on our patients’ experience. Basically all the products have the bleaching agents in them and they practically bleach your teeth ans make them look whiter.
– chewing gum-( trident white, aquafresh)- They all claim to clean your mouth after food and give you the freshness in your breath, the cost ranging from $1 and up. They effects are marginal and non- noticeable.
-Tooth paste-(whitening tooth paste like colgate, crest, sensodyne)- cost $3 and up.Most of the tooth pastes work with the abrasive agents and lean the teeth as the dentifrice, some have mild amounts of hydrogen peroxide which have some whitening effects on teeth. The effects are minimal and can be used as adjuncts.
-Over the counter trays and strips- Cost $23 and up- There are various products in the market claiming that they whiten teeth. They all contain bleaching products like hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide . They are not custom fit and one size fits all so they don’t touch all of your teeth at the same time. Our patients tell us that they take long time to be effective but this is the cheapest option you arr looking for white teeth.
-custom trays for whitening made at the dental office- Cost $100 to $300- These the trays made in the dental office by taking the mold of your teeth, supplied with the whitening gel. This is a take home kit and you do it yourself in the comfort of your own home. One of the effective methods of whitening and results last from 3- 6 months. As this is a custom fit , it touches all the teeth in the same time so the effects are noticeable.
Your dentist can create a custom mouthpiece tray that ensures the right amount of whitening solution reaches your teeth. You may find whitening at home more convenient. But it can take two to four weeks or longer depending on the strength of peroxide used. In-office whitening can take place in one or more 1- to 2-hour visits.
-Professional whitening( ZOOM , Brightsmile)- cost$300 to $1000. – This a an hour to 2 hours professional whitening done in the dental office with the help of a laser light. If you are looking for immediate effects this will work best for you but the chances of sensitive teeth are more as compared to any other kind of whitening, Some of our patients tell us that they are extremely sensitive to this even after 3-6 months after the procedure. We will be doing the complete exam in our office to access if your teeth are eligible for this whitening.
AS A SPECIAL OFFER IN OUR OFFICE YOU GET THE FREE CUSTOM TRAYS MADE IN OUR OFFICE IF YOU JOIN OUR FAMILY AS A NEW PATIENT.
Keep in mind, your teeth can become stained again if you continue exposing them to the same substances that originally stained them. Because whitening products are not meant to clean teeth, it is still important to continue practicing daily oral hygiene by brushing twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash daily.
